Archco

Architectural design across Canterbury.

Archco began in Rangiora, and North Canterbury is still home to much of our work, from Pegasus and Ohoka to Oxford and Greta Valley. From our central Christchurch studio we design rural, lifestyle and town homes across North and South Canterbury, and commercial projects for the communities in between.

Why Archco in Canterbury

North Canterbury roots

We started in Rangiora and have designed more than ten projects across North Canterbury, including the national award-winning Burntwood at Pegasus.

Rural and lifestyle expertise

Gabled rural forms at Ohapuku, an off-grid cabin at Sladdens Bush, and a heritage villa at Greta Valley. We design for open landscapes, prevailing winds and rural servicing.

Performance built in

Solar studies, energy modelling and well-insulated envelopes are part of how we design. Burntwood uses less than a fifth of the energy a standard home would need to stay at 20 degrees.

Local planning

Planning and building in Canterbury

  1. District plans across Canterbury

Waimakariri, Hurunui, Selwyn, Ashburton and Timaru each have their own district plan, with different rules for setbacks, site coverage, height and rural character. We confirm the rules for your property before concept design.

  2. Rural servicing

Lifestyle and rural sites often need on-site water, wastewater and stormwater solutions. We bring the right consultants in early so servicing shapes the site layout rather than being an afterthought.

  3. Wind and exposure

The Canterbury plains are exposed to strong nor'westers and cold southerlies. Courtyards, wing walls and careful glazing placement create sheltered outdoor living, as at Burntwood and Belmont.
