Our process.
Stages
Brief and site
We meet, in our Christchurch studio, on site or by video call, to understand how you live or work, what you want from the building, your budget and your timeframe. We review the site, its zoning and any hazards or overlays that will shape the design.
What you get
- A clear written brief
- Early advice on planning rules and site constraints
- A fee proposal for the stages ahead
Concept design
We explore how the building sits on the site: orientation, sun, views, shelter and the flow between spaces. Concepts are presented as plans, sketches and 3D views so you can picture living in them.
What you get
- Concept plans and 3D views
- A preferred direction agreed with you
- Early cost guidance from a quantity surveyor or builder where useful
Developed design
The chosen concept is refined: materials, structure, windows, joinery and services. We bring in engineers and other consultants and resolve the details that drive cost and quality.
What you get
- Developed plans, elevations and sections
- Material and finish selections
- Consultant input coordinated into the design
Consent documentation
We prepare the drawings and specifications for building consent, and resource consent where it's needed, and manage the application and any council requests for further information.
What you get
- Building consent drawings and specification
- Resource consent application where required
- Responses to council requests handled for you
Pricing and construction
We help you price the project with builders and can stay involved through construction, answering site questions, reviewing changes and keeping the finished building true to the design.
What you get
- Documentation ready for builder pricing
- Support choosing a builder
- Design support during construction
Questions we're often asked
How long does the design process take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the project and on consent requirements. A new home typically takes several months from brief to building consent. We'll give you a realistic programme for your project at the brief stage.
How are your fees structured?
We provide a fee proposal after our first meeting, broken down by stage, so you know what each part of the process includes before committing to it.
Do you work with any builder?
Yes. You're welcome to bring your own builder, or we can suggest builders we've worked with in your area.
