Archco

Architectural design for Wellington and the lower North Island.

Wellington's steep sites, wind and seismic conditions call for careful, engineered design. Our hillside work in Christchurch, including the five-level Scarborough rebuild, gives us direct experience of these challenges. We design across Wellington and the lower North Island from our Christchurch studio.

Scarborough, a hillside home among mature trees above Sumner, designed by Archco

Why Archco in Wellington

Steep-site specialists

Scarborough climbs five levels with two lifts. Glenstrae is split across a geotechnically challenging slope. Complex hillside sites are familiar ground for us.

Earthquake-rebuild experience

Many of our Christchurch projects were post-earthquake rebuilds. Seismic resilience is built into how we work with engineers.

A short flight away

Wellington is about 45 minutes from Christchurch by air. We combine online design reviews with site visits at key stages.

Work that travels

We design for sites across New Zealand, and the approach is the same wherever the land is: start with the landscape, the climate and the way you want to live. A few recent homes show how that plays out.

Local planning

Planning and building in Wellington

  1. Wind zones

Much of Wellington sits in high or very high wind zones, and some sites need specific engineering design. This affects structure, glazing and cladding choices.

  2. Slopes and seismic design

Steep sections and seismic conditions mean early engineering input on foundations, retaining and access.

  3. Regional plans

Wellington City, the Hutt, Kāpiti, the Wairarapa (under its combined district plan) and Hawke's Bay each have their own rules. In Hawke's Bay, flood and land categorisation after Cyclone Gabrielle can also affect a site.
