Archco

Architectural design for Queenstown, Wānaka and Arrowtown.

We design homes and holiday homes across the Queenstown Lakes District from our Christchurch studio. Our alpine work at Lake Ōhau shows our approach: minimal impact on the land, natural materials, and envelopes built for cold winters and intense sun.

Archco's award-winning Lake Ōhau retreat in its alpine setting

Why Archco in Queenstown Lakes

Alpine design experience

Our award-winning Lake Ōhau retreat responds to a similar climate and landscape: deep frosts, snow, strong winds and protected views.

Easy to work with remotely

Design reviews happen online and in our studio, with site visits at the key milestones. You get a single point of contact throughout.

Efficient designs for a high-cost market

Build costs in the Lakes are high. We focus on efficient footprints and buildable details so your budget goes into the things that matter.

Work that travels

We design for sites across New Zealand, and the approach is the same wherever the land is: start with the landscape, the climate and the way you want to live. A few recent homes show how that plays out.

Local planning

Planning and building in Queenstown Lakes

  1. Outstanding natural landscapes

Much of the Queenstown Lakes District is mapped as outstanding natural landscapes or features, with strict controls on building in rural areas. Early landscape input is often essential.

  2. Arrowtown and historic areas

Arrowtown and some other historic areas have specific design controls. We design to respect the character these rules protect.

  3. Snow, sun and wind

Snow loads, strong UV, cold winters and exposure all inform the structure, materials and glazing of a home in the Lakes.
