The Willows Cricket Club, nestled in Loburn, North Canterbury, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of cricket. Established on May 1st, 1994, this cherished ground is a sanctuary for young cricketers, embodying a dedication to preserving the game's legacy across generations.
Our task was twofold: to preserve the club's nostalgic charm while modernizing its infrastructure. The clubroom underwent a meticulous renovation, transitioning from its previous corrugated iron facade to a timeless weatherboard aesthetic. This transformation not only retained the essence of the club's history but also signaled a step towards sustainability and longevity.
Central to the project was the addition of a second changing/team room, extra toilets and showers, and an office for administrative needs. The expanded clubroom now boasts a captivating bar area, accentuated by exposed trusses and warm timber accents that evoke a sense of tradition and comfort. Throughout the space, carefully curated imagery and photography showcase the club's remarkable 30-year journey, creating a narrative thread that connects past achievements with future aspirations.
This project is more than a physical renovation; it's a celebration of the enduring spirit of cricket and the community it fosters. By seamlessly blending heritage aesthetics with contemporary functionality, we've crafted a space that not only honors the past but also propels the Willows Cricket Club into a vibrant and sustainable future.

Our design approach for the Willows Cricket Club renovation seamlessly integrates sustainable practices and heritage elements, creating a harmonious blend of history and modernity. Utilizing reclaimed timber from the Canterbury earthquakes, including timber flooring, panelling, and various hard timber items, underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility. These salvaged materials not only add character and warmth but also reduce the project's carbon footprint, aligning with the club's ethos of sustainability.
One of the standout features of the renovation is the replication of the design philosophy seen in the existing exposed timber trusses. Throughout the extension of the clubroom, we created new timber trusses that retained the aesthetic appeal of the originals while incorporating modern-day insulation requirements. This approach not only pays homage to the building's heritage but also ensures a seamless integration of old and new elements.
The timber theme extends beyond aesthetics, playing a vital role in creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere throughout the space. From the rich timber character in the bar area to the timber panelling that adds texture and warmth to the walls, every detail contributes to a cohesive design narrative.
By creatively repurposing materials, honoring architectural heritage, and prioritizing sustainability, the design for the Willows Cricket Club not only meets the project brief but also demonstrates the clients commitment to responsible and thoughtful architectural solutions.
